🄵 Why did "Home And Away" Do This To Us?

I think it might be time to get your eyes checked...

I’d like to speak to a manager, because how are we already halfway through July? It’ll be Christmas again soon and with all these blind boxes I’m buying, there’ll be nothing left in my bank account but hopes and dreams. Fingers crossed it’ll be enough. It’s the thought that counts, right?

Speaking of having thoughts, David Corenswet shared a few of his own while on the Superman press tour in Manila. Apparently, during the filming process a certain body part…of his almost got torn off while flying. (Hint: it rhymes with butts). You can check out what he and Rachel Brosnahan told the BuzzFeedOz team — right here.

At this current point in time, I’m seriously torn between the DCEU and MCU fandoms. With Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Vanessa Kirby and Ebon Moss-Bachrach running around Sydney for the Fantastic Four press tour, I fear the decision gets more difficult with each passing day. In saying that, I will be staring intently at my phone and refreshing X to see what the cast is wearing on the red carpet tonight. The FOMO is real.

Have an interesting rest of your week!

Laters,

Q: How many shots of espresso does Pedro Pascal like in his coffee?

You’re so hot, you’re making me defrost. I’ll treat you right and make you the boss.

When we locked eyes, I swear that I froze. In the chip aisle, you know, I could’ve proposed.

Your tired eyes and ā€œalmost thereā€ beard, are the stuff of my dreams and not ones that I feared.

If you were at Sunshine Woolies at 8:55 — in the chip aisle, looking for sour cream and chive.

Give me a ring and I’ll give you one back. I’ll buy you a packet, let’s give it a crack.

(I spent my whole commute making this poem for you. Is that enough effort?)

Remember When…Home And Away Completed Bungled A Storyline

There’s no denying Home and Away is an important part of Aussie culture. Though the show is still going strong (truly, it is), nothing was quite like the ā€˜00s storylines and all the drama they brought with it. I’m talking Summer Bay stalkers, ā€œwho’s the daddy?ā€ style pregnancies, and of course the short-lived pop careers of Tammin Sursok and Bec Hewitt (nĆ©e Cartwright).

While now the show focuses steadily on small town police and hospital drama for its main storylines, back in the ā€˜00s, fans got delivered juicy storylines from Summer Bay High and the caravan park, with plenty of teens running amok and causing chaos.

Remember the Sutherland twins?

Two of those teens were Kirsty and Jade Sutherland — two fraternal twins, part of the Sutherland family who ran the caravan park. The twins were, of course, embroiled in drama — for some reason they often liked to date the same dudes after each other, Jade battled an eating disorder and a drug problem, and Kirsty fell in love with the guy who, well, assaulted her older sister Dani at some stage.

But two of the more bizarre storylines for the twins happened years apart but changed their lives forever.

Firstly, in 2000, a massive mudslide threatened the lives of the Summer Bay residents, with Jade becoming stuck at the Stewarts’ house, and Kirsty, in a completely different location, screaming out for Jade suddenly because she sensed something was wrong.

When help arrives and they start digging to find Jade, Kirsty’s telepathic twin connection alerts her to the fact they are digging in the wrong spot. Eventually, thanks to Kirsty’s psychic twin connection with Jade, they save Jade just in the nick of time.

But not all was what it seemed…

Now, fast forward four years, through more teenage drama and angst, and the twins are rocked with another bombshell – their parents are alerted to the fact there was a disastrous mix up at the hospital many years before and, well, Jade is not a biological relation of the Sutherlands. Yep, she had been accidentally swapped over at birth, and her and Kirsty were not twins at all

Looking back, maybe it made sense that Jade never looked like anyone else in the family. Things go from startling to shocking though, when Kirsty’s real and IDENTICAL twin sister, Laura, comes to the Bay to meet her long-lost twins and her real biological parents, with Jade also getting to meet her DNA in the flesh.

I know what you’re thinking, and it’s a question that’s plagued me for years, even long after I stopped watching Home and Away. What about the twins’ psychic bond? Did the writers flat out forget? What did Christie Hayes, who played Kirsty, and Kate Garven, who played Jade, even think about this?

Christie Hayes on the bizarre Home and Away storyline

It was time to go straight to the source: Christie Hayes, played Kirsty on and off for nearly a decade on Home and Away, starting in 2000 and finishing up on TV screens in early 2005, before coming back in 2008 for a recurring appearance through ā€˜til 2009.

Taking her on a walk down memory lane, Christie was happy to rehash the bizarre storyline with BuzzFeed

ā€œI remember thinking, ā€˜What do you mean? They’re not twins? What are you talking about?!ā€™ā€ Christie exclaimed.

ā€œWe've just built, you know, four years of history finishing each other's sentences, of knowing where she [Jade] was because of the mudslide that happened, of having psychic intuition powers and stuff like that. What are you talking about?ā€ she laughed.

ā€œBut more so than the absurdity of it, I remember thinking, ā€˜Oh, that's really sad’, because one of the key relationships for the Sutherlands on Home and Away for myself and for Kate who played Jade, like it really was beautiful that we were sisters, and very close and fought and stuff.

ā€œAnd so I remember that kind of hitting home a bit more than just, well, that's ridiculous, because you just saw us finishing each other's sentences!ā€

Christie went on to say when the dust settled on the shock plot-twist, it also presented a new acting challenge for her, as she took on the role of playing both Kirsty and Laura.

ā€œI thought, all right, well, this is how things change. And this is acting and there's nothing as an actress that I don't want to do, right? So I just remember being excited that it was a great, juicy storyline. So I worked through the ridiculous and then the sadness of it and then we laughed and moved on.ā€

ā€œAnd then I found out that I was going to get paid twice as much money for, like, a couple of weeks, because it counted as me the the actor playing two characters, and so if you were playing a different character, paid more money!ā€ Christie laughed. ā€œIt didn't last for that long, but it was a fun storyline.ā€

Where is Christie Hayes aka Kirsty Sutherland now?

Christie currently hosts the Dan & Christie Show on the Hit Network and recently announced she’s expecting her third child. She still acts, and is set to appear in an exciting new Aussie film in the coming year, but when we asked if Kirsty Sutherland could ever appear back on our screens, she didn’t rule it out.

ā€œI would absolutely go back, if they wanted me to come back for a third time!ā€ she said. ā€œI still love all the people that worked there and I haven’t seen them for a long time, but you don’t ever just move on from something like that.ā€

I think there’s something wild going on at my workplace…

I just started yesterday and there were about seven or eight people in this one section talking about being a furry and asking about fursonas. What the hell is a fursona??

This guy, let’s call him Jacko, he was telling everyone that he wanted to be a toucan named Sticky Beak. Then this other lady was talking about how she was willing to jump around like Tigger and scare people in her fur suit. Do you think I have to become a furry to fit in?
